I’ve recently had the pleasure of getting to know Zak Malik as an incredibly kind human and as an amazing candidate for one of our open roles. After reviewing countless candidates, one resume stood out above all others.
Zak is clearly a gifted designer, as well as a gentle and driven soul, and a great father.
When talent and a sense of humor is evident in a glance, you know you need to connect, even to acknowledge it briefly, regardless if there is a fit for the particular role.
With past experience in product design at Hyatt, Accenture, with High end nightclubs that host Lil’ Wayne AND he was an entrepreneur in China? Yeah. That’s amazing. I immediately reached out to Zak to introduce myself and see how I could help.
We’re still working together to find the perfect match- but (after asking for permission) I felt it was important to share his profile as the perfect example of how to differentiate yourself as a candidate in a crowded field. It doesn’t matter if you’re in design, engineering or neither- being able to quickly share your passions, your talents and do so in a fun and engaging way is critical when you only have moments to impress. Be professional, be honest, be open and authentic and don’t just follow the crowd as to what society says your profile or resume “should be”.
Zak has done this easily with his wit and his eye for detail. If you’re not a designer, hire one. If you need help on your resume, ask. Don’t just stick to the old chronological resume- focus on what matters to you and what you WANT to be working on for the next several years.
Be clear about who you are as well as who you are NOT, share what you are passionate about, and why you are looking for a new role. Only then will you be able to articulate best what you want folks to know about you and how you can make their lives easier, or brighten and better their organization’s culture.
You are unique.
Take a que from Zak Malik and share that individuality on your resume as well as in your interviews.
Zak is still looking for his ideal role- so feel free to reach out to him through his portfolio or his resume here!
Cheers,
Dave
